How to Use Some of the Yahoo Groups Online Features

Edit Your Membership:
  • For example purposes, I will use the Calendar Screen to show how to edit your membership.
    • First Sign-in with Yahoo with your Yahoo ID and password.
    • Go to the TS Online Calendar (see Link at the end of the Tutorial) and you will see a screen similiar to the one pictured below (if it is not in "month" display, click on "month" tab):
TS Yahoo Online Calendar - Edit Membership

    • Just above the "Tampa-SIngles - Tampa Singles" group identifying us and our members calendar, use will see "Edit Membership" next your Yahoo ID and alternate email address.  Click on that link to take to the next screen as pictured below:
Edit Your Membership

    • Step 1 is your contact information.  Most importantly is how you would like to have your group-email messages sent to by choosing one of your email addresses (either your Yahoo ID or your alternate email).  In this example, I've choosen to have all my messages sent to my alternate email.
    • Review and complete each of the steps, if you have questions, please click on the Edit Membership Help link in the upper right hand corner of the page.
    • Remember to scroll down and click on "Save Changes" for your edited membership information.
    • Then you can either use your browser's "back" (to the previous webpage) button or click on the Calendar button located in the left hand column box.
How to Use the Online Calendar

Adding an Event:
  • Using Yahoo Groups Online Calendar is fairly simple and straight forward.  I will step you through using an event that I've added to the August 2007 online calendar.
  • Once at our online calendar webpage, you may have to click on "month" tab to display the full current month.  You can use the forward and back buttons to go to the correct month you wish to add an event.
  • Please do not add "RSVP's" as events to the online calendar.  Unlike our "published" calendar, use your event's "reminders" box when adding your event (see below) or send out additional group-emails using the group-email address to the membership.
  • Scroll to the day of the month you'd like to add your event and click on the "[add]" box to the right of the date (see picture below) in this example it is August 10th:

  • The following "Add Event" screen will appear as depicted below:

  • Complete the entire form with as much information for other members to see once they "click" on your event after you have saved it:
    • Title Brief Title of your event: in this example I inputed: "Happy Hour at Jackson's Bistro -- Harbor Island."
    • Event Type:  This you can skip or change to "club event" -- it doesn't effect the calendar per se.
    • Date:  This also can be skipped since you already selected the day of the event from the main calendar.
    • Time/DurationMust change this information - for the "default" time is always "noon" for 1 hour.
    • Location:  Can put the address if you have it here -- makes it easier for members to locate the place via their favorite map search program/website.
    • Notes:  I'd reccommend that you start off with a "canned statement": "Please do not respond/reply to this online calendar generated reminder."  This way members will know its NOT from you directly, but uses our group-email address as the "to and from" to send out the reminders if used.   This is where I would put all the relevent information about the event such as: location/directions, cost, parking, what to bring/take, RSVP information and contact number(s), and/or email address to contact, along with your first name and first initial of your last name.  You have up to 2,000 characters to describe your event.
    • Repeating:  This defaults to "this event does not repeat" and for a one day event should be unchanged.  However, if your event is for multiple days -- for example a weekend trip etc, then this feature should be used to host your event.
    • Reminders:  The online calendar can provide up to 2 reminders if desired.  Otherwise the "default" setting is "none."  I'd recommend the use of at least 1 reminder at least 2 days ahead of your event if RSVP is required/needed or longer to match with the time needed for reservations etc.  The online calendar generated reminders will be automatically sent out using our group-email based on the "start time" of your event (see picture below:)  NOTE:  with the use of reminders, automatically generated by the online calendar -- please DO NOT respond to these reminders if you see that the "To" and "From" are both "Tampa-singles@yahoogroups.com" for as you know, this email address is our group-email and all replies would be broadcasted to all members.  Please contact the person hosting the event from the information provided in the reminder's "Notes" section.
Event Reminders
    • Remember to click on "Save" your input, afterwards you'll be brought back to our calendar with your event added.
Editing or Deleting an Event:
  • As the "author" of your event on the online calendar, you also have the ability to change [edit] or cancel [delete] your event's information posted.
  • Click on the already "added" event on the calendar to see the full information about the hosted event.  If you are the author, then you will see [Edit] and [Delete] box links for your action, if desired.  Click on the appropriate box link and make the appropriate change or cancellation.  Example is depicted below:
Change or Cancel an Event

  • After "editing" your event, remember to click on "Update" your input, afterwards you'll be brought back to our calendar with your updated event displayed on the calendar.
  • If you are cancelling your event and wanting it removed from the calendar, click on your event, click on [Delete], confirm with clicking on "Delete" again and you'll be brought back to our calendar with your event removed.
